Male bison are much larger and heavier than females.  Plains bison are smaller in size than that of wood bison.  Bison can reach 12' in size from head to tail and 9' for females.  They can reach 7' in height and weigh from 700 to 2,800 lbs.  Both sexes have short, curved horns that can grow up to 2' long.  In the late 18th century, there were approx. 60 million bison roaming the plains of the West.  By 1889, the population dropped to only 541 animals.  Today, 15,000 Bison can be found across the plains of the Western United States.  Bison are herbivores.
